fort collins downtown alleys & integrated walkways master plan

Russell + Mills Studios is currently completing a master plan for the Downtown Development Authority that examines the transformation of alleyways into shared usable environments for pedestrians, bicycles, and still provide the functions of regular alleys.

The opportunities to create a network of connections from CSU to downtown Fort Collins was investigated via a detailed analysis process that identified a network of alleys that can achieve the goal of connecting the area. Via a walk through with interested participants, the alleys were scores on a variety of criteria of opportunities and constraints. This analysis helped define many elements found within the alleys and also create a hierarchy of potential alleys that could be implemented via a phased construction period.

After a pre-design public workshop and when the analysis was complete, Russell + Mills Studios prepared conceptual plans and illustrations for ten potential alleys. The vision in the concept plans took the design from the alley right of way and explored the potentials for businesses along the alleys to open out to the upgraded area to create larger shared courts, patios and plazas. Balancing this with economic opportunities, many businesses have reacted favorably at the opportunity of extending their usable footprint.

The designs and illustration were presented to the public via an open house where feedback could be given per alley. Russell + Mills Studios also presented to the DDA board who gave further support for the project moving forward and possible implementation of a number of alleys. The master plan report, when adopted will help guide the development of downtown in years to come.
